On February 7, 2019, Keith Terrell Cooperwood, a 29-year-old Black man, was killed in a shooting outside the Nine90 Wisteria Apartments on Wisteria Place in Hoover, Alabama. In the afternoon, police were called to the apartment complex after reports of gunfire in the parking lot near the 1300 building. When officers arrived, Cooperwood was found shot and was pronounced dead at the scene shortly after 3 p.m., according to authorities and the Jefferson County coroner’s identification.
Investigators said the moments leading up to the shooting began as an argument between Cooperwood and another man in the parking lot. Witnesses described the dispute escalating, with Cooperwood walking to his vehicle and retrieving a handgun before approaching the other man again. What happened next unfolded quickly: the confrontation reignited at close range, shots were fired, and Cooperwood was struck.
In the immediate aftermath, the shooter left the scene, and police began searching the area, including the use of a K-9 unit as they tried to track him down. Not long after, the man returned on his own and surrendered to Hoover police. Detectives interviewed him and, after consultation with the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office, he was released while the investigation continued. At that stage, authorities treated him as the suspected shooter but did not publicly identify him or announce any charges.
Days later, officials announced that the District Attorney’s Office would not issue warrants and would not pursue charges at that time. Police said their detectives had gathered evidence, interviewed witnesses, and reviewed autopsy results, then presented their findings to prosecutors, who declined to move forward with an arrest warrant based on what had been developed in the case. Public reporting at the time described the outcome as no charges being filed in connection with the fatal shooting.
