On a summer afternoon, the life of 8-year-old Royta Giles Jr., a male, was tragically cut short in a burst of gunfire at the Riverchase Galleria in Hoover, Alabama. The boy, who was looking forward to starting the third grade, was shopping with his family for Fourth of July outfits on July 3, 2020. They were waiting to enter a children's clothing store when a dispute between several men erupted into a shootout on the first level of the mall, near the food court.
An innocent bystander, Royta was struck by a stray bullet and died from his injuries. Three other people were also wounded in the crossfire.
The investigation into the senseless killing led authorities to identify three suspects: Montez Coleman, then 22, King Gary Williams, 19, and Demetrius Dewayne Jackson Jr., also 19. The motive for the shooting was believed to be an ongoing feud that escalated into violence inside the busy shopping center. All three men were subsequently arrested and faced charges of capital murder for the death of a person under the age of 14, in addition to three counts of second-degree assault for the injuries to the other victims.
The legal proceedings brought a measure of justice for Royta's family. Montez Coleman pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of reckless murder and was sentenced to 30 years in prison. King Gary Williams also entered a guilty plea to reckless murder and received a 25-year prison sentence for his role in the fatal shooting. Demetrius Dewayne Jackson Jr. was the only one of the three to go to trial. A jury found him guilty of the lesser charge of reckless manslaughter, along with three counts of second-degree assault. His defense attorney had argued that he acted in self-defense. Jackson was later sentenced for his conviction. The tragic incident prompted a lawsuit by Royta's family against the mall's management and security for failing to provide a safe environment.
