Jose Raul Cardenas-Ramirez, a 36-year-old Hispanic man, was killed on September 23, 2014, in Hoover, Alabama, after what investigators described as a workplace shooting at the Renaissance Ross Bridge Golf Resort and Spa. In the early morning hours, staff came upon his body in an employee-only area of the hotel, in a basement kitchen section not meant for guests, and police treated the scene as a homicide while the resort continued operating aboveground.
As detectives pieced together the hours leading up to his death, the focus narrowed to a co-worker: Rayon Bartley, a janitorial worker connected to the property through a staffing company. Authorities said he had been fired the day before, then returned after midnight; by morning, Cardenas-Ramirez was dead. Investigators moved quickly to secure a warrant, but by the time the net tightened, Bartley was already running—out of Alabama and onto a Greyhound bus headed toward Florida, where officers believed he had family and possible shelter.
The chase became an interstate manhunt. U.S. Marshals and local police tracked Bartley across state lines and converged on a Greyhound station in West Palm Beach, where they took him into custody. Officials described a brief struggle during the arrest, with multiple marshals needed to get him into handcuffs, and said Bartley protested as he was subdued.
After his capture, Bartley was brought back to Alabama to face prosecution. Reports at the time stated he was charged with murder in connection with the shooting death of Cardenas-Ramirez and was transferred from custody in Florida to the Jefferson County Jail in Bessemer, with bond details not immediately released publicly. In the aftermath, accounts also described the loss in personal terms: Cardenas-Ramirez was engaged and had a baby, and the killing left co-workers and family trying to understand how a firing and a return visit could harden into violence overnight.
