In a quiet apartment complex in the Brook Highland area of Shelby County, just off Highway 280, a beloved educator's life was tragically cut short. On a Sunday evening in November 2019, deputies were called to the 400 block of Meadow Drive to investigate a reported altercation. When they arrived, they were unable to make contact with anyone inside the residence.
Members of the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office Tactical Response Unit and Crisis Negotiations Unit were dispatched to the scene. Upon entering the apartment, they discovered a grim scene. Inside, they found the bodies of two men, both of whom resided in the apartment. The investigation would later reveal the incident to be a murder-suicide.
The victim was identified as Tracy Ford, a 42-year-old male who had dedicated his life to education. He was a longtime and respected figure in the Fairfield City Schools district, where he served as the director of human resources and data analytics. He had previously been a principal and a teacher, leaving a lasting impact on his colleagues and students. Friends and coworkers remembered him as an exceptionally kind and happy person who would go out of his way to make others smile, often greeting the women with a hug and the men with a handshake each morning.
Authorities determined that Ford had been shot and killed by his roommate, 35-year-old Timothy Ackers. After killing Ford, Ackers then turned the gun on himself, ending his own life. The motive behind the tragic event was not publicly released. The loss of Tracy Ford was deeply felt by his community, who mourned a man known for his kindness and dedication to serving others through his work in education.
