On March 15, 2009, 39-year-old Brennan 'B.J.' Jackson was shot and killed at his home in the Ensley neighborhood of Birmingham, Alabama. The fatal encounter, which took place at his residence on the 1400 block of Avenue I, was the result of a deal involving ten pounds of marijuana that turned violent. Jackson, a male, was found deceased from gunshot wounds on his doorstep, leaving behind three children.
The investigation into the homicide revealed a complex series of events involving
several individuals. According to police, two men, Willie Dunn and Melvin Houston, went to Jackson's house to make a large marijuana purchase, a meeting set up by an acquaintance named Kevin Clay. Inside the home at the time were Jackson's brother and a friend, who were in a back room. They overheard a group of men talking in the front room, which soon escalated into an argument, followed by the sound of gunfire. As the events unfolded, Jackson's friend retrieved a rifle and fired at the intruders as they fled the scene.
Kevin Clay, who had arranged the meeting, later contacted the police and provided information about the incident. He claimed that an argument over the money for the drug transaction led to the shooting. Investigators were able to identify Willie Dunn and Melvin Houston as the primary suspects. Dunn initially denied firing his weapon but later admitted to shooting three times. Houston claimed he was hired by Dunn for $1,500 and ran when the shooting began.
Following the investigation, both Willie Dunn and Melvin Houston were arrested. Willie Dunn ultimately pleaded guilty to murder and received a sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole. Melvin Houston pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of manslaughter and was sentenced to 20 years in prison. Two other men who were questioned in connection with the murder, Kevin Clay and a man identified as Robert who drove the suspects to the location, were not charged with any crime related to Brennan Jackson's death.
