In the quiet community of Silverhill, Alabama, a dedicated public servant's life was tragically cut short in the line of duty. Deputy Sheriff Scott Jeffrey Ward, a 47-year-old male, had devoted 15 years to the Baldwin County Sheriff's Office, a commitment that followed his prior service with the Prichard Police Department. On a fateful Friday afternoon, November 23, 2012, Deputy Ward and two of his fellow deputies responded to a domestic disturbance call on Mallard Lane. A mother had called for assistance after being unable to reach her son by phone and finding him emotionally disturbed upon her arrival at his home. The deputies were attempting to speak with the man on his front porch when the situation took a sudden and violent turn. Without warning, the man produced a handgun and opened fire on the officers.
In the ensuing chaos, Deputy Ward and another deputy were struck by gunfire. The third deputy returned fire, killing the suspect at the scene. Despite wearing their protective vests, both wounded deputies sustained critical injuries and were airlifted to the University of South Alabama Medical Center. Tragically, Deputy Scott Jeffrey Ward succumbed to his wounds.
The loss of Deputy Ward was felt deeply by his family, colleagues, and the community he had sworn to protect. He was remembered as a respected and loved figure by his fellow deputies and members of the Coast Guard. He is survived by his wife. The man who shot him was killed by return fire at the scene, and therefore, there were no subsequent arrests or trials.
