On August 23, 2014, in Birmingham, Alabama, 20-year-old Cornigel Lafayette Murray was fatally shot during an altercation at a Kangaroo Express gas station on Robert Jemison Road. The incident began when Murray, accompanied by two other individuals, confronted William Leigh Oliver, who was refueling his vehicle. Murray struck Oliver, knocking him to the ground. Fearing for his safety as the group closed in, Oliver drew his firearm and shot Murray once, resulting in his death.
