In the late hours of a September evening in 2015, the life of 19-year-old Mariah Farrow was tragically cut short in Phenix City, Alabama. A freshman at Columbus State University with a bright future ahead, Mariah was known for her bubbly personality and was just beginning to embrace her independence. On the night of September 13th, she was shot multiple times while sitting in her car.
She was rushed to a nearby medical center, where she ultimately succumbed to her injuries during surgery.
The investigation into the young woman's death quickly pointed to a tumultuous relationship with her ex-boyfriend, Demetrius Dorsey. In the days leading up to the fatal shooting, the two had reportedly argued publicly on social media. Farrow had even posted a chilling message stating that people she didn't want either hit her or wanted to kill her. Investigators uncovered threatening text messages from Dorsey to Farrow, sent just moments before her death, in which he explicitly threatened to kill her. Her response suggested she may not have taken the threats seriously.
An eyewitness to the shooting eventually came forward and identified Demetrius Dorsey as the gunman. He was arrested without incident the following afternoon and charged with her murder. Evidence discovered during the investigation, including incriminating messages on his phone, solidified the case against him. Dorsey's house was located only a few minutes from where the shooting occurred.
Ultimately, Demetrius Dorsey was convicted for the murder of Mariah Farrow and sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole. He is currently serving his sentence at the Elmore Correctional Facility and will be eligible for parole in October 2030. Mariah's family, who were unaware of the extent of the abuse she had endured in her relationship, continue to keep her memory alive and advocate for awareness of domestic violence.
