In the quiet city of Phenix City, Alabama, the life of a young mother was tragically cut short. Jennifer 'Dee' Chambers, a 27-year-old Black female, was a student at Virginia College and a 2009 graduate of Central High School. She was a mother to a young son and was described as a cheerful and loving person.
On the night of November 8, 2017, the unimaginable happened. After leaving her son with her mother to attend a class, Jennifer never returned to pick him up.
Concerned when she couldn't be reached, her family began to search for her. The search ended in heartbreak when Jennifer was found in her vehicle, having been fatally shot. She was discovered in the driver's seat of her car.
The Phenix City Police Department immediately launched an investigation into her death. In the days that followed, authorities identified a person of interest, Derek Jerome Thomas. Despite their efforts to locate him, Thomas remained at large for over three years. The investigation continued, and on December 23, 2020, a murder warrant was officially issued for his arrest.
The search for Derek Jerome Thomas eventually led investigators to Tennessee, where he was located and subsequently extradited back to Phenix City. In January of 2021, the Phenix City Police Department announced that Thomas, then 34 years old, was facing a capital murder charge in connection with the death of Jennifer Chambers, bringing a long-awaited step towards justice for her family and loved ones.
