In the autumn of 2023, the community of Phenix City, Alabama, was unsettled by the discovery of a local woman's remains. Forty-four-year-old Jennifer Marie Anderson, a female resident of the city, was found deceased on October 27, 2023. Her body was located in a ditch on the side of the road near the intersection of Brickyard Road and Fontaine Road.
When authorities arrived at the scene at approximately 1:15 p.m., they found her in an advanced stage of decomposition, indicating some time had passed since her death. The Phenix City Police Department immediately launched a homicide investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death.
As the investigation progressed, law enforcement officials and Anderson's family sought help from the public for any information that could lead to an arrest. Her father, Pat Felder, offered a $1,500 reward for information that would result in the arrest and prosecution of the person or persons responsible for his daughter's death. Central Alabama CrimeStoppers also offered a $1,000 reward, appealing to the community for any leads in the case. The case remained under active investigation for several months, with the police pursuing various leads and evidence.
A significant development in the case came on March 25, 2024, when the Phenix City Police Department's Criminal Investigations Division made an arrest in connection with Anderson's murder. Thirty-eight-year-old Navansley Vonquez Smith, also a resident of Phenix City, was taken into custody and charged with her murder. While an arrest has been made, authorities have stated that the investigation is still ongoing.
