In the quiet community of Lillian, Alabama, a grim discovery was made on November 15, 2015. The body of 22-year-old Devin Kennedy, a male resident of Pensacola, Florida, was found inside a vehicle, launching a homicide investigation that would span nearly a decade. Kennedy had been reported missing from his hometown just a day before his body was found.
The initial investigation into Kennedy's death pointed to multiple potential suspects, but a lack of sufficient evidence stalled the
case. For years, the investigation remained open but grew cold, leaving family and friends without answers. Despite the passage of time, law enforcement officials did not give up on finding justice for the young man whose life was cut short.
A significant breakthrough in the case came in April 2023, breathing new life into the cold case. New information, combined with a re-examination of the initial evidence gathered from the crime scene, led investigators to identify a primary suspect. Decody Darnell Herring, a 32-year-old man also from Pensacola, was arrested and charged with Kennedy's murder. At the time of his arrest, Herring had recently been released from a Florida prison on a gun charge and had been a person of interest in the early stages of the investigation.
Following his arrest, Herring was booked into the Baldwin County Jail with his bond set at $150,000. While an arrest has been made, authorities have not yet released a motive for the killing.
