In the fading afternoon light of a Sunday in Birmingham, Alabama, a verbal dispute between relatives escalated into a tragedy that would end a life. On November 16, 2025, Richard Dwayne Freeman, a 59-year-old man, was shot in the Riley neighborhood of the city, on Maple Avenue Southwest. The argument that preceded the shooting was described by authorities as a disagreement between Freeman and a younger male relative.
Neighbors reported hearing a disturbance just before 4 p.m., followed
by the sound of gunfire. When Birmingham police officers arrived at the 3500 block of Maple Avenue, they discovered Freeman with a serious gunshot wound. Emergency crews from Birmingham Fire and Rescue provided immediate medical aid at the scene before rushing him to UAB Hospital. Despite their efforts, Richard Freeman was pronounced dead at the hospital.
The investigation into the shooting quickly pointed to a suspect. Not long after the incident, authorities detained an individual, though his identity was initially withheld as they gathered evidence and prepared formal charges. Two days later, on November 18, the Birmingham Police Department publicly announced the arrest of 35-year-old Emmanuel Turner.
Emmanuel Turner, also of Birmingham, was identified as Richard Freeman's nephew. Investigators stated that the shooting was the culmination of the earlier argument between the uncle and nephew. Turner was taken into custody in the 1700 block of First Avenue North and has since been charged with murder. He was being held in the Jefferson County Jail without bond, and as of the latest reports, no other suspects were being sought in connection with the fatal shooting.
