On a cold January evening in 2016, the life of Markees Antwon Lee, a 27-year-old Black man, was cut short by an act of violence in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. The fatal shooting occurred on January 11, 2016, during what was meant to be a celebration—a birthday party. In the midst of the gathering, gunfire erupted, and Lee sustained injuries that would ultimately prove fatal.
