In the winter of 2016, the life of a young man just beginning to forge his path was tragically cut short in Pleasant Grove, Alabama. Ashton Blake Roberts, a 21-year-old male, was fatally shot on January 13, 2016, during a robbery at the Jack's restaurant where he was a customer.
The incident unfolded as a harrowing armed robbery, creating a scene of chaos and violence that ultimately claimed Roberts' life.
The senseless act left a community in shock and a family grappling with an immense loss.
An investigation into the violent crime was launched, leading law enforcement to identify a suspect. The trail eventually led to Roderick King. In addition to the murder of Ashton Roberts, investigators connected King to a string of other robberies in the area, including one at a Papa Murphy's Pizza in Hueytown and an incident involving gunfire at a Burger King in Fairfield.
In December of 2018, then 22-year-old Roderick King appeared in court and pleaded guilty to the murder of Ashton Roberts. As part of a plea agreement, King's admission of guilt spared him a potential death sentence. He was subsequently sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, ensuring he would be held accountable for his actions.
