On August 14, 2022, 22-year-old Adam Simjee and his girlfriend, Mikayla Paulus, both students at the University of Central Florida, were hiking in Alabama's Talladega National Forest near Cheaha State Park. During their excursion, they were approached by 21-year-old Yasmine Marie Adel Hider, who claimed her vehicle had broken down and requested assistance. As Simjee attempted to help, Hider produced a firearm, demanding that the couple empty their pockets and move deeper into the woods.
