In the late hours of a Sunday evening in February 2016, the life of 22-year-old LaDarius Demetris Moorer, a Black male from Mobile, Alabama, was tragically cut short. The events that unfolded on February 21st at the Woodland Apartments in Prichard stemmed from a domestic dispute. Moorer had gone to an apartment where a woman he knew was located. When she denied him entry, he reportedly forced his way inside by kicking the door in.
Once inside, a confrontation ensued with another man who
was present in the apartment. This altercation quickly escalated, resulting in Moorer being shot multiple times. When police responded to reports of gunfire around 8 p.m., they discovered a woman attempting to administer CPR to Moorer, but his injuries were too severe, and he was pronounced dead at the scene. In the immediate aftermath, investigators identified a person of interest but did not make any immediate arrests.
Later reports would identify the shooter as local rapper HoneyKomb Brazy, who was said to have been a childhood friend of Moorer. The shooting was ultimately deemed an act of self-defense, and no charges were filed against him in relation to Moorer's death. The justification for this decision was that Moorer's actions constituted a home invasion. The incident, however, is believed to have sparked a chain of violent retaliatory acts. Years later, Moorer's uncle, Darrin Southall, would allegedly seek revenge, leading to the tragic murders of HoneyKomb Brazy's grandparents in 2021. LaDarius Moorer was survived by his young son, his parents, and numerous other family members and friends who mourned the violent end to his young life.
