In a quiet, gated community in Birmingham, Alabama, the life of 37-year-old Connie Overstreet Woolweaver was tragically cut short on December 14, 2016. A mother of two, she was found inside her Highland Lakes home by her 13-year-old son when he returned from school that Wednesday afternoon. The scene that greeted the young boy was described by authorities as terrible; his mother had been shot multiple times with a 9mm handgun, including at least one wound to the head, and was pronounced dead at
the scene.
Investigators quickly determined that her death was not a random act of violence, pointing to the secure nature of her neighborhood which required visitors to be signed in by a security guard. This led them to believe that Woolweaver likely knew her killer. Their investigation soon focused on Adam Michael Burrus, a 37-year-old married businessman who was described as a longtime friend and business partner of Woolweaver. She was involved with his fishing lure company, Bass Attacker.
Burrus was taken into custody for questioning the day after Woolweaver's body was discovered and was subsequently arrested and charged with her murder. Authorities characterized the killing as a 'crime of passion.' While a definitive motive was not immediately established, investigators explored the theory that a dispute over money may have been a contributing factor. There were suggestions that Woolweaver had loaned Burrus a significant sum of money. He was held on a $500,000 bond. The community of friends and family, left devastated and heartbroken by the loss of a woman described as radiant, beautiful, and full of life, rallied to support her two children who were left without their mother.
