In the winter of 2017, a dispute between neighbors over a dog in Sylacauga, Alabama, escalated to a fatal encounter, leaving one man dead and a community in search of answers. The victim was identified as Charlie Hayes, a 63-year-old male resident of the area.

On January 25, 2017, an argument erupted, reportedly concerning a dog. During the course of this disagreement, Hayes was shot. Emergency services were called to the scene, but the gunshot wound proved to be fatal.
