Jaylen Henderson, an 18-year-old Black male from Montgomery, was killed on the morning of January 30, 2017, in a shooting on the 1800 block of Cairnbrook Drive. According to Montgomery police, officers and fire medics were called there at about 8:20 a.m. on a report of a person shot, and when they arrived they found Henderson with a fatal gunshot wound.
He was pronounced dead at the scene, and investigators quickly opened a homicide case as family and friends were left to absorb the sudden loss. His full name, Jaylen Earl DeVondree Henderson, appeared in obituary and memorial notices published after his death, which placed him firmly in the Montgomery community he left behind.
In the first days after the killing, the case moved fast. Montgomery police announced that 17-year-old Markeefé Hill, also of Montgomery, turned himself in to detectives and was charged with murder in Henderson’s death. Police said Hill was a friend of Henderson’s, a detail that made the case feel even more intimate and tragic, as though the violence had come from inside a familiar circle rather than from some distant threat. Authorities said Hill was being held under a $150,000 bond after the arrest, turning what had begun as a morning shooting call into a case with a named suspect almost immediately.
The public record that is readily available online is much clearer about the death and the arrest than it is about what happened afterward. The sources located identify Henderson as the victim, place the shooting at Cairnbrook Drive, and name Hill as the person arrested and charged, but they do not clearly show later publicly accessible reporting on a trial, plea, dismissal, or conviction in the case. What remains most visible in those reports is the abruptness of the loss: a young man found shot on a Montgomery street, a homicide investigation opened the same day, and an arrest announced almost at once, leaving behind a story that began in violence and, at least in the easily found public accounts, never received the same level of follow-up attention afterward.
