On a Tuesday morning, August 19, 2003, 11-year-old Heaven LaShae Ross, known to her loved ones as Shae, left her family's home in Northport, Alabama. The sixth-grader was making the short walk to her school bus stop, a routine journey that should have ended with her arrival at Collins-Riverside Middle School. Tragically, she was never seen alive again. Her disappearance sparked a massive search and a years-long mystery that would leave her family and the community grappling with unanswered questions.
For more than three years, Shae's whereabouts remained unknown. Then, on December 19, 2006, a man collecting cans in an abandoned house in Holt, Alabama, approximately eight miles from where Shae was last seen, made a grim discovery. In a crawlspace, he found human skeletal remains. The clothing found with the remains, a distinctive hot pink Bratz shirt, immediately led investigators to believe they had found Shae. Her bookbag was also found nearby. Dental records would later confirm the remains were indeed those of Heaven LaShae Ross.
The discovery of Shae's remains confirmed the worst fears of her family and investigators: she had been murdered. However, due to the condition of her remains, the exact cause of death could not be determined. The house where she was found was known to be a location for illicit activities, leading investigators to believe that people who frequented the property might have information about her death.
Over the years, the investigation into Shae's murder has faced numerous challenges. Early in the investigation, her parents, Beth and Kevin Thompson, voluntarily took and passed polygraph examinations, and were not considered suspects. A 21-year-old man, who was a friend of Shae's older brother and had a history of harboring runaways, was questioned but was ultimately cleared of any involvement in her disappearance. A suspicious fire in Shae's bedroom about five weeks after she went missing added another layer of complexity to the case but did not lead to any breakthroughs. To this day, no arrests have been made in connection with the murder of Heaven LaShae Ross, and her killer remains at large. The case is still considered active, and authorities continue to ask for anyone with information to come forward.
