In the spring of 1963 in Prichard, Alabama, the life of 72-year-old Lexie Haynes, a female widow, came to a violent and tragic end. The investigation into Lexie Haynes's death revealed unsettling details about the young suspect. A witness came forward, recounting a disturbing statement made by Whisenhant. He had allegedly brandished a bullet from the stolen handgun and ominously declared that it would soon be the instrument of someone's death. In 1965, he brutally assaulted a 22-year-old woman named Rose Covington, for which he was convicted and served a portion of a 20-year sentence. After his release, his violence escalated, and he went on to commit a series of brutal murders of other women in Mobile County, Alabama, between 1975 and 1976. It was his arrest for the murder of Cheryl Payton in October 1976 that finally brought his reign of terror to an end.
During the investigation into these later crimes, Thomas Whisenhant confessed to a string of violent acts, including the long-unsolved murder of his former neighbor, Lexie Haynes. He was ultimately tried and convicted for the murder of Cheryl Payton and sentenced to death. After spending over three decades on death row, making him one of Alabama's longest-serving death row inmates, Thomas Warren Whisenhant was executed by lethal injection in 2010. While he was never formally tried for the murder of Lexie Haynes due to his conviction for other capital offenses, his confession finally brought a resolution to the decades-old question of who was responsible for her untimely death.
