Jasmine Fields, a 26-year-old Black female, found her life tragically cut short on October 3, 2019, in what authorities have described as a domestic violence-related murder-suicide in Prichard, Alabama, near Mobile. Remembered by her family as having a bubbly spirit and being beautiful inside and out, she was a mother to two young children, ages five and seven at the time of her death.
On that Thursday, Fields was in the process of leaving her ex-boyfriend, 24-year-old Tyvontae Johnson.
She had packed her belongings and was at a friend's home on Bellmeade Drive when Johnson appeared. In a horrifying turn of events, Johnson chased Fields around a car and shot her multiple times. The brutal attack was witnessed by her two children, who were inside a vehicle at the scene. After killing Fields, Johnson then turned the gun on himself, ending his own life.
A third individual, Jasmine's close friend Sameka Stabler, was also shot during the incident as she bravely tried to intervene and protect her friend. Stabler was critically injured but initially survived the shooting. She was transported to a local hospital for treatment of a gunshot wound to the chest.
In a devastating and unforeseen development, Stabler's life was also taken just weeks after she was released from the hospital. On October 23, 2019, she was found in her car on the side of an interstate in Mobile with several gunshot wounds. Before she succumbed to her injuries, Stabler was able to identify her attacker as 19-year-old Tremaine Johnson, the brother of Tyvontae Johnson. Tremaine Johnson was subsequently arrested and charged with Stabler's murder, in what investigators believe was a retaliatory act. Following the initial traumatic event, the Mobile Child Advocacy Center was enlisted to provide counseling for Jasmine Fields' two children.
