In the fall of 2016, the life of 19-year-old Shamichael Scott was tragically cut short in Mobile, Alabama. On the evening of October 7th, she was discovered in a local PNC Bank parking lot, having sustained multiple gunshot wounds. Alongside her was 20-year-old Salathio Lockett, who had also been fatally shot. The grim discovery launched a homicide investigation by the Mobile Police Department, a case that would later gain national attention when it was featured on the A&E television series
'The First 48.'
The investigation into the double homicide led authorities to two suspects, Anthony Nathaniel Ford Jr. and Caesar Lamar Harris. The case presented a narrative of a quick-money scam that had taken a deadly turn. As the legal process unfolded, the two men faced charges for the murders of Scott and Lockett. In early 2019, Caesar Lamar Harris entered a guilty plea to the charge of murder, accepting his role in the events that led to the two deaths.
Anthony Nathaniel Ford Jr.'s path through the justice system was more complex. His case went to trial in late 2019. During the proceedings, Ford admitted to being present at the time of the shooting and to assisting Harris afterward but maintained that he was not the shooter and had no prior knowledge of a plan to commit murder. The trial was fraught with complications, including concerns that jurors may have been influenced by the 'The First 48' episode that detailed the investigation. This ultimately led to the necessity of a retrial, which was scheduled to begin in March of 2020. Eventually, Anthony Ford was sentenced to a term of 25 years in prison for his involvement in the deaths of Shamichael Scott and Salathio Lockett.
