In the early hours of a Sunday morning, on November 26, 2023, the life of 46-year-old Jovonni McKeller was tragically cut short in what police have described as a senseless act of violence. McKeller, a female resident of Mobile County, was attending a gathering on Sweeney Lane in Prichard, Alabama, when gunfire erupted. The incident unfolded over the Thanksgiving weekend, turning a time of celebration into one of mourning.
According to investigators, the shooting appeared to be a
drive-by, with an unidentified person or persons driving up to the location and firing a barrage of bullets into the crowd before fleeing the scene. McKellar was struck by the gunfire and died from her injuries. Another woman at the party was also wounded but her injuries were reported as non-life-threatening. Law enforcement officials have stated that they do not believe McKeller or the other wounded woman were the intended targets of the shooting.
The investigation into the deadly shooting led to the arrests of two suspects. In January of the following year, Bryson Davis was taken into custody and charged with murder in connection with McKellar's death. A witness reportedly told detectives that Davis and another group had been involved in an argument at a bar earlier that night. Following the altercation, they allegedly walked across the street and began shooting at the party where McKellar was present.
Further investigation led to a second arrest in May. Travon Glover was apprehended by the Mobile County Sheriff's Office and also charged with the murder of Jovonni McKeller. In addition to the murder charge, Glover faced charges of assault and discharging a gun into an occupied building or vehicle. The arrests brought a measure of hope for justice to a family and community grieving the loss of an innocent life.
