In the early morning hours of December 5, 2023, a tragedy unfolded in Mobile, Alabama, that cut short the life of 9-year-old Cailee Knight. While asleep on the couch in her mother's home on Rhett Drive, Cailee was struck by gunfire in a drive-by shooting. Multiple rounds were fired into the residence, with at least two striking the young girl. She was rushed to a local hospital but ultimately succumbed to her injuries.
The investigation into Cailee's death quickly pointed to a dispute
that did not involve her. Authorities believe the intended target of the shooting was a family member inside the house. The senseless act of violence is thought to have stemmed from an ongoing feud. An AR-15 rifle was identified as the weapon used in the attack, highlighting the indiscriminate and dangerous nature of the crime. The incident drew immediate condemnation from the community and law enforcement, who pledged to bring those responsible to justice.
In the days and weeks that followed, a series of arrests were made in connection with the fatal shooting. Ariel Curry, 22, and Tyrone Williams, 19, were among the first to be taken into custody. Subsequently, 18-year-old Darius Lucky was also apprehended. All three faced murder charges. As the investigation progressed, a Mobile County Grand Jury handed down indictments against these three individuals, as well as Ricki Thier, on two counts of capital murder. Curry, Williams, and Thier also face charges of attempted murder for firing into an occupied dwelling. A fifth suspect was also indicted, though their identity was not immediately made public. The suspects are being held without bond as they await trial.
