On January 5, 1982, 25-year-old Detective Mary Pearl McCord of the Montgomery Police Department was fatally shot while attempting to arrest a suspected drug dealer on Traction Avenue in North Montgomery. During the arrest, the suspect resisted and opened fire, wounding both Detective McCord and her partner, Officer Tony Burks. Despite being transported to a hospital, Detective McCord succumbed to her injuries.
