In the winter of 1982, the city of Montgomery, Alabama, was rocked by the tragic death of a dedicated public servant. Mary Pearl McCord, a 25-year-old Black / African American female detective with the Montgomery Police Department, lost her life in the line of duty on the evening of January 5th. A respected member of the Vice and Narcotics unit, Detective McCord had been with the department for three years, committed to making her community a safer place.
On that fateful Tuesday,
Detective McCord and her partner, Officer Tony Burks, were working to apprehend a suspected drug dealer on Traction Avenue in North Montgomery. During the attempt to make an arrest, the situation escalated dramatically. The suspect, identified as Paul Edward Murry, resisted and opened fire on the two officers. Both Detective McCord and Officer Burks were struck by the gunfire. Despite being rushed to a local hospital, Detective McCord's injuries proved to be fatal. Her partner, Officer Burks, was seriously wounded in the attack.
The assailant, Paul Edward Murry, was apprehended shortly after the shooting. He was subsequently charged with capital murder for the death of Detective McCord. Following a trial, Murry was convicted and initially sentenced to death. However, in 1985, he was granted a new trial which resulted in his sentence being changed to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole. The death of Detective Mary Pearl McCord was a profound loss for the Montgomery community and a somber reminder of the dangers faced by law enforcement officers.
