In the late summer of 2017, the life of 22-year-old Devin Edward Richard was tragically cut short. On August 31, 2017, he and a friend, 21-year-old Damian “Blake” Ricketts, were found deceased inside a car in a driveway on Analicia Drive in the East Limestone area of Alabama. Both men had sustained multiple gunshot wounds. The discovery launched a double homicide investigation that would unfold over several years, involving a complex narrative of a drug transaction gone fatally wrong.
Investigators quickly identified a suspect, 19-year-old Jadon Gideon Copeland of Madison. The events leading to the deaths of Richard and Ricketts reportedly began at a party where they were introduced to Copeland with the intention of purchasing marijuana. According to testimony presented in court, Copeland agreed to meet with them for a drug deal. He provided them with his location via a text message and awaited their arrival. Copeland informed investigators that during the transaction, a dispute arose. He alleged that Ricketts, who was in possession of an Airsoft BB rifle that appeared to be a real firearm, demanded that Copeland give them all of his drugs.
Feeling threatened by the situation, Copeland claimed he feigned crying before backing away and opening fire on both Richard and Ricketts. He used a 9mm handgun in the shooting. Following the investigation, Jadon Gideon Copeland was arrested and charged with two counts of capital murder for the deaths of Devin Edward Richard and Damian Blake Ricketts.
The case proceeded through the legal system, culminating in a trial where Copeland’s defense team argued that his actions were justified under Alabama's 'stand your ground' law. They contended that Copeland acted in self-defense, reasonably believing he was in imminent danger. In February 2023, a jury deliberated on the evidence and testimony presented. Ultimately, the jury acquitted Jadon Gideon Copeland, finding him not guilty of the capital murder charges.
