On September 19, 2017, 21-year-old Denzel Pope of Sylacauga, Alabama, was found deceased in his vehicle on the westbound shoulder of Highway 280 in Alexander City. Responding officers discovered that both Pope and his vehicle had sustained gunshot wounds, indicating a fatal shooting incident.
