In the early morning hours of January 18, 2017, the life of 27-year-old Ladarrell Lamar Hart was tragically cut short in his Alexander City, Alabama, home. A male, Hart was discovered by his roommate at approximately 5 a.m., having suffered apparent gunshot wounds. The roommate had last been in contact with Hart via a social media message around 3 a.m.
Investigators who responded to the residence on Third Street began the arduous task of piecing together the events that led to the homicide.
The Alexander City Police Department launched an investigation, collecting evidence and interviewing individuals who might have had information about the crime. Their efforts led them to two young men from the nearby town of Dadeville. On a Friday following the incident, after executing two search warrants, authorities took 20-year-old Edward Rashun Thomas and 20-year-old Bobby Lee Ponds Jr. into custody. Both men were subsequently charged with capital murder in connection with Hart's death.
As the legal process unfolded, details of that fatal night began to emerge. According to an account provided by Bobby Lee Ponds Jr., he and Edward Rashun Thomas were at Hart's home, where they were drinking and playing cards. Ponds claimed that, without any provocation, Thomas shot Hart. Following the shooting, Ponds said he fled the house and called his sister for a ride. As they were leaving, both he and his sister allegedly saw Thomas walking away from the residence carrying two televisions.
In a significant development in the case, Bobby Lee Ponds Jr. accepted a plea deal. He pleaded guilty as a youthful offender and agreed to be a witness for the prosecution against Edward Rashun Thomas. In exchange for his testimony, Ponds was sentenced to a maximum of three years of probation. This agreement was a crucial step for prosecutors in building their case against the alleged shooter.
