On October 28, 2017, Cain was fatally shot at the Sun Inn in the western part of the city. Remembered for his charming smile, warm sense of humor, and loyalty, Cain was a fun-loving and caring individual who cherished spending time with his family, friends, and his beloved dogs.
His death left behind a grieving family, including his daughter, parents, and sister.
The investigation into Cain's death led to the arrest of Anthony Lanard Carter II, who was 36 years old at the time. Carter was charged with intentional murder in connection with the shooting. According to a witness statement given to the police, the incident began with an altercation initiated by Carter, which ultimately escalated to Cain being shot. There were indications that the dispute may have been over a woman.
As the case prepared to go to trial in November 2018, a significant development occurred. The Jefferson County District Attorney's Office requested a dismissal of the case against Anthony Lanard Carter II. The request was granted by a judge, who cited the prosecution's inability to locate and serve a necessary witness after exhausting all available options. While Carter's attorney stated they were prepared to argue self-defense, the dismissal was a blow to the prosecution's efforts. The District Attorney's office has, however, left open the possibility of pursuing the case again if the witness is eventually found.
