John Eric Cole, a 29-year-old male, tragically lost his life on what was supposed to be his first day at a new job. On November 17, 2021, at the Samuel Associated Tube Group, a manufacturing facility in Pinson, a suburb of Birmingham, Alabama, Cole was shot and killed by a coworker. The incident unfolded around midnight, creating a scene of chaos and sorrow in the workplace.

The man responsible for the shooting was identified as 34-year-old Dexter Rashad Walker, a fellow employee at the facility. Walker did not flee the scene and, in a surprising turn of events, turned himself in to the Jefferson County sheriff's deputies who had arrived. He was subsequently arrested and charged with murder, held in the Jefferson County Jail without bond. Investigations into the motive revealed a troubled history between the two men, who knew each other outside of their shared workplace. Court records indicated that Cole was the stepfather of Walker's son, and there had been previous allegations of abuse made by Walker against Cole, leading to a temporary protection order that was later dismissed.
The legal proceedings that followed the tragic event culminated in a trial that brought some measure of closure to the case. Dexter Rashad Walker was initially indicted for intentional murder. However, a jury ultimately convicted him of a lesser charge: heat-of-passion manslaughter. In March 2025, the court sentenced Walker to 20 years in prison for the killing of John Eric Cole, bringing an end to a painful chapter for all involved.
