On November 12, 2017, in Cullman, Alabama, 56-year-old Perry Shoemake was fatally shot by his stepson, William Thomas Maddux. The incident occurred at Shoemake's residence on Cottonwood Drive SE in the Carrol Acres subdivision. According to law enforcement, Maddux attempted to enter the home but was initially denied access.
