Jacquelyn Kay Jackie Sherrill

On the last day of 1984, Sergeant Jacquelyn 'Jackie' Kay Sherrill, a dedicated officer with the Hattiesburg Police Department, was tragically killed in the line of duty. A California native born in 1951, Sherrill had moved to Hattiesburg at a young age and broke barriers by becoming the city's first female police officer in 1974. Her career was marked by further achievements, including her promotion to sergeant and detective in 1983, another first for a woman in her department.
