In 2017, Michael Shane Stepp, a 53-year-old man, was killed in a shooting in Birmingham, Alabama. The incident led to the arrest of Stacey Gordon, who was subsequently charged with capital murder.

The events that culminated in Stepp's death began when Stepp reportedly approached Gordon on the street multiple times, offering him a ride. Gordon eventually accepted the offer.
