In 2017, Michael Shane Stepp, a 53-year-old man, was killed in a shooting in Birmingham, Alabama. The incident led to the arrest of Stacey Gordon, who was subsequently charged with capital murder.
The events that culminated in Stepp's death began when Stepp reportedly approached Gordon on the street multiple times, offering him a ride. Gordon eventually accepted the offer. However, once in the vehicle, Gordon realized they were not heading towards his home.
He stated that Stepp refused to let him out of the car and indicated an intention to take him somewhere for a sexual encounter.
Feeling his life was in danger, Gordon pulled out a gun. He claimed that when Stepp appeared to be reaching for something in the car, he shot him. Gordon's legal team argued that he acted in self-defense. During the subsequent trial, information about Stepp's past as a convicted sex offender was introduced. A former law enforcement officer testified about a 'predator sex ring' involving Stepp in the late 1980s, where teenage boys were lured with money or drugs for sexual favors.
In October 2019, a Jefferson County jury found Stacey Gordon not guilty on three charges of capital murder. His defense successfully argued that he acted under Alabama's 'Stand Your Ground' law, believing he was in imminent danger.
