On the evening of December 1, 2017, in Montgomery, Alabama, 32-year-old Vantrell Flynn, an African American male, was fatally shot in an incident that authorities would later describe as stemming from a domestic dispute. The shooting occurred around 6 p.m. in the 7000 block of Taylor Crossing. Responding to the scene, emergency personnel discovered Flynn with a gunshot wound and transported him to Baptist Medical Center South.
Despite the efforts of medical staff, he was pronounced dead later that evening.
The investigation into Flynn's death, which marked the city's 43rd homicide of the year, quickly focused on a domestic dispute as the underlying cause. The Montgomery Police Department identified 30-year-old Cornelius Fain, a resident of Talladega, as the primary suspect in the fatal shooting. Fain was known to Flynn, and the dispute that led to the shooting was between the two men.
A breakthrough in the case came on December 6, 2017, when members of the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force located and apprehended Cornelius Fain in Talladega. Following his arrest, Fain was charged with murder in connection with Vantrell Flynn's death. He was then transported to the Montgomery County Detention Facility, where he was held on a $150,000 bond. The community mourned the loss of Flynn, with funeral services held on December 9, 2017, at Mercy Baptist Church in Montgomery, followed by his burial at Big Zion Cemetery.
