In the winter of 2017, the community of Prichard, Alabama, was shaken by the violent death of Cindy Darrington, a 39-year-old Black / African American woman known for her positive presence and work with a local church. On the evening of December 1st, police were called to a residence on North Fairport Drive where they discovered Darrington had been fatally shot.
The incident was quickly determined to be a result of a domestic dispute.
A mother to three teenage sons, Darrington was remembered as a kind and welcoming figure in the Gulf Village community, where she was actively involved with The Light of the Village Church, assisting those in need. Her sudden and tragic death left her family and community mourning the loss of a woman described as a mother figure to many. Her work as a missionary and her caring and helpful nature were hallmarks of her life.
In the aftermath of the shooting, law enforcement officials swiftly identified a suspect. Cornelius Johnson, then 27 years old, was taken into custody in connection with Darrington's death. He faced a series of serious charges, including murder, first-degree domestic violence, and three counts of third-degree domestic violence for menacing. Additionally, Johnson was charged with being a person prohibited from possessing a firearm. Following his arrest, he was held in the Mobile County Metro Jail after being denied bond.
