John Donald Higby, Sr., an 89-year-old male, was killed on Wednesday, December 27, 2017, in what police described as an apparent robbery. The incident occurred around 12:50 p.m. in the parking lot of the Dauphin Square Shopping Center located at 3170 Dauphin Street in Mobile, Alabama. Higby was discovered inside his vehicle and was pronounced deceased at the scene from a gunshot wound.
Witnesses reported that the shooting happened during an altercation.
Following an investigation into the homicide, the Mobile Police Department identified a suspect. On January 12, 2018, authorities arrested 28-year-old Greg O'Neal Hackett. He was subsequently charged with two counts of capital murder in connection with the death of John Higby. At the time of the incident, the Mobile Police Department had offered a $5,000 cash reward for information that would lead to the arrest and prosecution of the person or persons responsible for Higby's death.
