In the early moments of March 1, 2023, the quiet of a Mobile, Alabama, neighborhood was broken by the sound of gunfire. Responding to a call at approximately 12:17 a.m., police officers arrived on the 1500 block of Heron Drive to a grim discovery. There, lying in the roadway, was a man who had been shot. The victim was pronounced deceased at the scene. He was later identified as 50-year-old Michael E.
Carmichael.
The investigation into the death of Michael Carmichael, a male, quickly became a homicide case. Within weeks, the Mobile Police Department identified and apprehended three individuals in connection with the fatal shooting. On March 16, 2023, investigators arrested 18-year-old Terry Raine and a 17-year-old female. Less than two weeks later, on March 28, a third suspect, 21-year-old Sincere Jadakiss Payne, was also taken into custody. All three were charged with murder and first-degree robbery.
As the case proceeded through the legal system, the individuals responsible for Michael Carmichael's death were brought to justice. Sincere Jadakiss Payne pleaded guilty to charges of murder and robbery. Prosecutors believe the motive for the killing was a drug deal that took a violent turn. Terry Raine also entered a guilty plea, but to the charge of first-degree robbery. In a plea agreement, the felony murder charge against him was dropped. Raine was sentenced to 20 years in prison, with all but three years suspended, to be followed by three years of probation. The motive presented in his case was that the assailants had ambushed Carmichael after he left an ATM, stealing his debit card and $450.
