On January 21, 1909, in Mobile, Alabama, Deputy Sheriff Philip Fatch, aged 40, was fatally shot while attempting to serve a warrant for assault and battery on Richard Roberson, an African American man. Accompanied by another deputy, Fatch approached Roberson, who drew a handgun and opened fire, striking Fatch in the abdomen and wounding the other deputy in the ankle.
