Just minutes after midnight on January 1, 2024, 19-year-old Marcus Kennedy Jr., a Black male, was fatally shot in the city's downtown entertainment district on Dolphin Street. The incident, which marked Mobile's first homicide of the year, occurred amidst the New Year's Eve celebrations, turning a time of revelry into one of sorrow.
According to police reports, the shooting followed an altercation
between Kennedy and another individual. The dispute escalated, culminating in the gunfire that claimed Kennedy's life. The community was left shaken by the violent act that transpired as a new year was just beginning.
In the days that followed, the Mobile Police Department investigated the homicide, leading to the arrest of a 16-year-old male. The teenage suspect was subsequently charged with murder in connection with the shooting death of Marcus Kennedy Jr. Due to legal protections for youthful offenders, the name of the accused has not been publicly released.
