On December 26, 2021, 24-year-old Maurice Ladarius Simmons was fatally shot in Prichard, Alabama, a city adjacent to Mobile. According to his mother, Simmons had arranged to meet a potential buyer for his cell phone through Facebook Marketplace. The transaction, however, turned deadly when Simmons was shot in broad daylight.
