Rodney Martin, a 42-year-old Black man, was killed on February 8, 2018, after a shooting outside the Energize gas station on St. Stephens Road in Prichard’s Whistler area, just north of Mobile. According to investigators, the violence erupted around 8:55 that night as Martin was leaving the store, after what police described as an apparent argument involving him and a female subject. In the space of a few seconds, a routine stop turned fatal. Martin was shot in the parking lot and later died from his injuries, leaving family and friends to absorb the kind of sudden loss that turns an ordinary evening into a permanent dividing line.

In the months that followed, authorities and prosecutors identified Laderrick Hopson of Bay Minette as the shooter. Federal prosecutors later said surveillance video showed Hopson inside the convenience store, then following another customer outside and opening fire. Court records tied the ammunition to the scene, and prosecutors said Hopson racked the gun before firing, ejecting a live round that investigators recovered during the homicide investigation. That federal case moved first: in July 2018, Hopson pleaded guilty to being a felon in possession of ammunition, and in December 2018 he was sentenced in federal court to 71 months in prison. The federal authorities said the ammunition charge was connected to the Prichard shooting, which meant the case was already tightening around him even before the murder prosecution reached its end.

The state murder case took longer, but it did not fade. In April 2021, a Mobile County jury found Hopson guilty of murder in Martin’s death. Reporting on the trial said prosecutors proved that Martin was shot six times at the gas station. The conviction brought a public statement from the Mobile County District Attorney’s Office emphasizing that the verdict gave long-delayed justice and closure to Martin’s mother, daughter, son, and the many other people who had carried the loss since 2018. What began as a gas-station confrontation ended, years later, in a courtroom where the killing was no longer an unanswered act of street violence but a murder fixed to a single name.

After the conviction, Hopson was sentenced in June 2021 to life in prison for the murder. Reports also said he had previously been picked up on murder charges by the Prichard Police Department and that he later confessed to the crime. Based on the sources available, Hopson is the only suspect publicly identified in Martin’s killing, and the case appears to have ended with his conviction and life sentence rather than with multiple defendants or an unsolved trail of competing theories. In the end, the record that remains is stark: Rodney Martin was gunned down outside a neighborhood gas station, and the man authorities said followed him out of the store was arrested, prosecuted, convicted of murder, and sentenced to spend the rest of his life in prison.
