In March of 2018, the community of Auburn, Alabama, was saddened to learn of the death of former Auburn University football player Zach Gilbert. The 33-year-old male was discovered deceased in his Birmingham home on Wednesday, March 28, 2018. His death was the result of a single gunshot wound.
Investigators from the Jefferson County Coroner's Office, who responded to the scene, stated that while the investigation was ongoing, they believed the wound to be self-inflicted.

Zach Gilbert was a former walk-on defensive back for the Auburn Tigers football team from 2003 to 2006, earning a scholarship and playing in every game of his senior season.
