On March 4, 2017, 26-year-old Herman Cornelius Lane was fatally shot in his Auburn, Alabama apartment. The Auburn Police Department responded to reports of gunfire and discovered Lane deceased at the scene. The investigation led to the arrest of Carlos Heard, who was charged with Lane's murder. Heard was later convicted and sentenced for the crime. Lane was remembered by friends and family as a fun, entertaining, and courageous individual who was easy to get along with.
