On May 19, 2019, Officer William "Will" Buechner, a 13-year veteran of the Auburn Police Division, was fatally shot while responding to a domestic disturbance at a mobile home park in Auburn, Alabama. Upon arrival, Officer Buechner and his colleagues were met with gunfire from 29-year-old Grady Wayne Wilkes, who was wearing military-style body armor and a helmet. The attack resulted in Officer Buechner's death and injuries to Officers Webb Sistrunk and Evan Elliott.
