On a summer morning in 2018, the quiet of a northwest Madison County neighborhood was shattered by the sound of gunfire. On August 2nd, 36-year-old Cedrick Lipscomb, a Black/African American male, was found shot to death in the driveway of a home on Turtlehill Drive. Emergency services arrived around 9:30 a.m. to find Lipscomb deceased, having sustained multiple gunshot wounds.
The news came as a shock to neighbors in the typically peaceful area near Huntsville's Providence community, some of whom had initially dismissed the gunshots as construction noise.
In the hours following the discovery, the Madison County Sheriff's Office began an intensive investigation into the homicide. Authorities worked to piece together the events leading up to the fatal shooting. While assuring the public that they believed it to be an isolated incident with no ongoing threat to the community, they actively sought information from anyone who might have seen or heard something. They were particularly interested in any video surveillance from the neighborhood that might offer clues.
Investigators quickly identified a person of interest in the case: 34-year-old Jumar Sims. A description of Sims was released to the public, noting his height at 5 feet 10 inches and his weight at 220 pounds. Law enforcement also stated that he might be driving a grey 2013 Nissan Altima with an Alabama license plate. Friends and family mourned the loss of Cedrick Lipscomb, remembering him as a fun-loving individual who had attended Butler High School and worked in lawn services. His funeral was held on August 11, 2018, at Syler Tabernacle in Huntsville, and he was laid to rest at Meadowlawn Garden of Peace in Toney, Alabama. The investigation into his death continued as authorities sought to bring justice for the untimely and violent end to his life.
