In the early hours of a spring morning in Washington, D.C., a violent encounter left one young man dead and another wounded. The incident unfolded on Monday, May 31, 2010, when police were called to the 900 block of Decatur Street, NW, at approximately 2:33 a.m. for a report of a shooting. Upon arrival, they discovered a male victim suffering from a gunshot wound.
He was transported to a local hospital for treatment.
Minutes later, at around 2:40 a.m., a second call directed officers to the 800 block of Crittenden Street, NW, just a short distance away. There, they found another male victim who had also been shot. This man, identified as 21-year-old Oscar Rubio of the 800 block of Decatur Street, NW, was rushed to a hospital where he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at 3:44 a.m.
Detectives with the Metropolitan Police Department began an investigation into the shootings, exploring the possibility that the two incidents were connected. The surviving victim's identity was withheld as he was considered a witness in the case. The preliminary motive for the attack was believed to be armed robbery.
