On a Sunday morning in Washington, D.C., the life of 25-year-old Demontay Matthews, a Black male from Southeast, D.C., was tragically cut short. On February 23, 2025, at approximately 9:39 a.m., the sounds of gunfire echoed through a residential building in the Unit block of Galveston Street, Southwest. The Metropolitan Police Department's Seventh District officers were the first to arrive at the scene, where they discovered Matthews suffering from gunshot wounds.

personnel from DC Fire and EMS were dispatched to the location and immediately began administering lifesaving measures. Despite their strenuous efforts, Demontay Matthews was pronounced deceased at the scene, his life taken by the violence that had erupted that morning. The community was left in a state of shock and mourning following the incident, with many residents expressing their concerns over the persistent issue of gun violence in the area and calling for greater safety measures to be implemented.
In the wake of the shooting, the Metropolitan Police Department launched a homicide investigation to piece together the events that led to Matthews' death.
