On a Sunday morning in Washington, D.C., the life of 25-year-old Demontay Matthews, a Black male from Southeast, D.C., was tragically cut short. On February 23, 2025, at approximately 9:39 a.m., the sounds of gunfire echoed through a residential building in the Unit block of Galveston Street, Southwest. The Metropolitan Police Department's Seventh District officers were the first to arrive at the scene, where they discovered Matthews suffering from gunshot wounds.
