On the evening of October 14, 2018, a dispute in the Smithfield neighborhood of Birmingham, Alabama, tragically cut short the life of 22-year-old Kerry McClure, an African American male. McClure had gone to an apartment complex on the 200 block of 9th Court North to drop off his children. An argument broke out between McClure and another individual.
The verbal altercation escalated, leading the other person to get into their vehicle.
As the individual began to drive away, they fired multiple gunshots in McClure's direction. One of the bullets struck McClure, critically injuring him. Emergency services arrived at the scene and transported him to UAB Hospital for treatment.
Despite the efforts of medical staff, Kerry McClure succumbed to his injuries around 1 a.m. on October 15, 2018. The Birmingham Police Department quickly launched a homicide investigation. Their inquiries led them to identify 24-year-old Talvin Willoughby of Birmingham as the suspect in the fatal shooting. Willoughby was subsequently taken into custody and charged with capital murder in connection with McClure's death.
