On Christmas morning, December 25, 2018, Romero Deon McMorris, a 27-year-old Black man from the Birmingham-area community of Fultondale, was drawn into a deadly moment in Fairfield, Alabama. As the day began, gunfire erupted in a public-housing community behind Miles College, in the area known as Demetrius C. Newton Gardens along the 600 block of 55th Place.
